Promising Up-and-Comers

There’s nothing fancy about this entry; I just have a handful of fun tidbits to report:

  • A good friend of mine from Sewanee named Matthew Pitt was recently notified that one of his short stories will appear in The Oxford American, which hails from my old state of Arkansas. Even more impressively, a short story of his that was originally published in The Southern Review was recently selected by Stephen King for the “Honorable Mention” section of the latest edition of Best American Short Stories.
  • Another Sewanee friend named Amy Greene recently hit a grand slam her first time at bat when her debut novel Bloodroot was accepted for publication by Robin Dresser at Knopf. There are (of course) some anticipated edits, but she should be appearing in a bookstore near you sometime in the next twelve months.
  • More narcissitically, my own short story “The Night Comes in A’Falling” is now available in the most recent edition of Ontario Review. Woo-hoo!

I’m especially excited about those first two bits of news because I spent a fair amount of time with Matt and Amy this past summer, and can tell you that they are both kind, generous people. You’ll also, I’m sure, be hearing more from each of them in the coming months and years. It’s exciting when good people do well!

Until next time . . .
